Museum-grade prints from the Pacific coast, the redwood cathedrals, and the still waters of Northern California. Captured in black and white by Joshua Paul. Every digital order includes the exclusive 5×5 Joshua 1:9 Blessing Card (JPG + PDF).
I photograph in monochrome because the world is already loud. The Pacific fog doesn't need a hue to be felt. A redwood cathedral doesn't need green to be sacred. The still water beside which the psalmist was led — that stillness lives in tone, not in color.
Every print in this gallery is produced from a single high-resolution negative, toned and sharpened by hand, and printed on archival cotton rag at sizes up to 24 × 36 inches. These are not posters. They are made to be framed, lived with, and passed on.
Each body of work moves through a different movement of the Pacific Northwest — from the tideline to the forest to the last light to the living water.
Every photograph is printed on demand through a museum-grade print partner, using archival pigment inks on cotton rag fine art paper or stretched canvas. Each print is shipped directly from the print studio to your door.
Digital downloads are also available — each delivered as a 7200-pixel high-resolution JPEG, ready to print at your local fine art printer up to 24 × 36 inches at 300 DPI.
Inquire about a print →I'm a black and white fine art photographer working along the Pacific coast and in the redwood forests of Northern California. My work is about stillness — the kind that survives when everything else is stripped away.
I started photographing in monochrome after realizing that the photographs that moved me most — the ones that hung in the galleries I admired — weren't the ones that showed me what a place looked like. They were the ones that made me feel what it was like to stand there.
The name of this studio comes from Genesis. Thorns and thistles are the broken work of a broken world. The olive branch is what the dove brings back — the sign that the waters are receding, that peace is possible again. I photograph in the space between those two things.
